# 5-4-3-2-1 Grounding Technique
When spiraling, intrusive thoughts, or emotional overwhelm hits - this forces your brain into present-moment awareness and breaks the loop.
The Exercise
Work through each sense, counting down:
- 5 things you SEE - name them specifically (crack in ceiling, red light on monitor, shadow on wall)
- 4 things you can TOUCH - feel them (chair fabric, phone in pocket, floor under feet, air on skin)
- 3 things you HEAR - identify distinct sounds (HVAC hum, distant voices, your breathing)
- 2 things you SMELL - even subtle ones (coffee, antiseptic, nothing = notice the absence)
- 1 thing you TASTE - whatever's in your mouth right now
Why It Works
- Engages all senses simultaneously
- Impossible to ruminate while actively cataloging environment
- Anchors you to physical reality vs. mental projection
- Takes 30-60 seconds, can be done anywhere without anyone noticing
When to Use
- Intrusive memories/sounds replaying
- Pre-spiral when you feel emotions rising
- Anxiety before difficult situations
- Anytime you're stuck in your head and need to get out
